METRO MANILA — March 2, 2025 — Donors and volunteers from The Roundtable - Atheists PH, Secular Filipinos for Better Governance, and the Philippine Pastafarian Church conducted a heartfelt outreach at House of Somang, a care facility for abandoned and financially displaced senior citizens.
A total of 41 elderly residents received medical supplies, groceries, and afternoon snacks through the initiative. Leading the visit was Rev. Vince, who spent time engaging with the residents, many of whom shared emotional responses to the rare but meaningful gesture of being visited by strangers who show them compassion and care.
“These residents have lived through painful stories of loss, abandonment, and economic hardship,” the organizers shared. “For many, visits like these are reminders that they are still seen, heard, and valued.”
The event also aimed to raise awareness about the growing issue of senior abandonment in the Philippines. While Filipino culture traditionally places high value on caring for the elderly, economic challenges can lead families to make difficult decisions. Organizers emphasized that there should be no shame in seeking external support for elder care and called for a more compassionate, non-judgmental approach to assisted living options.“This is a conversation about dignity,” the statement continued. “Respecting life means respecting it through one’s final years. Let’s be kinder to families navigating these difficult choices.”
The organizers expressed deep gratitude to the staff of House of Somang for their tireless work and ongoing partnership, and reaffirmed their commitment to making regular visits to the facility.
